Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality

Don’t mess with a girl with a great personality!

Everybody loves Lexi. She’s popular, smart, funny…but she’s never been one of those girls, the pretty ones who get all the attention from guys. And on top of that, her seven-year-old sister, Mackenzie, is a terror in a tiara, part of a pageant scene where she gets praised for her beauty (with the help of fake hair and tons of make-up).

Lexi’s sick of it. She’s sick of being the girl who hears about kisses instead of getting them. She’s sick of being ignored by her longtime crush, Logan. She’s sick of being taken for granted by her pageant-obsessed mom. And she’s sick of having all her family’s money wasted on a phony pursuit of perfection.

The time has come for Lexi to step out from the sidelines. Girls without great personalities aren’t going to know what hit them. Because Lexi’s going to play the beauty game–and she’s in it to win it.

Young Adult Choice List selection

Best YA Character nominee, RT Reviews

“Eulberg writes a wonderful tale of an ordinary girl starring in her own, ordinary story. Entertaining, engaging, and above all realistic, this is a breath of fresh air for the YA market. This one’s for all us regular girls out there.”
– RT Book Reviews, 4.5 stars

“”Eulberg writes what starts as a witty, fast-moving comedy and morphs it into an affecting drama, drawing cogent parallels between the pageant circuit and Lexi’s Dallas high school…. Excellent comedy and drama.””
– Kirkus Reviews

BEHIND THE STORY

Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality came from two different story ideas.

As someone who has been labeled as having a “great personality,” I wanted to write about a girl who is funny and clever, but guys never think of her in that way. The title came to me right away, but I kept saying to my editor and agent, “something like Revenge of the Girl with the Great Personality…” because I never thought they’d let me have such a long title! While Lexi and her personal struggles came to me right away, there was something missing.

One day I was talking to my editor, the fabulous David Levithan, about my obsession with those reality shows like Toddlers& Tiaras and how I wanted to write a book set in one because of all the struggles (both financially and emotionally) those families have for a crown. David called me the next day and said, “That’s what your great personality story is missing – a beauty pageant sister!”

So I took the two ideas and made it into one story. Having the beauty pageant storyline and the obsession with perfection really helped make Lexi’s story more compelling. I’ll admit, it wasn’t easy combining two books into one, but it was worth it!
