Prom and Prejudice...and some surprises!

Last night was the publication party for Prom and Prejudice at Books of Wonder...and it was an unbelievable evening.  I knew I was going to write a blog the next day to post some pictures from the event, but never in a million years did I think I'd have so many wonderful stories to share.  Last night will forever go down as one of the most amazing nights of my life where I was surrounded by so many wonderful friends - old and new. First, as an author, words cannot begin to describe what it's like to walk into a bookstore and see this.

Right there you know you're in for a fun night!  But the surprises were just starting. As I was talking to my fabulous editor, David Levithan, at the front of the store, who walked in but Suzanne Collins!  I was complete taken aback that she showed up, because, you know, she's got a lot going on!!!  I was Suzanne's publicist when I was at Scholastic and worked on the first three Gregor the Overlander books (her amazing pre-Hunger Games series ).  We've kept in touch through the years and she has been so super supportive of my writing career and I count myself as one of her biggest fans (not only of her books, but for the fact that she truly is one of the nicest people around).  For those of you who have seen Suzanne on tour, you know she does incredible character voices, so I was just a little intimidated having her there, but mostly incredibly honored.

With with an incognito Suzanne!

After that shock wore off, the cute Kaila from Books of Wonder came over with a package and asked me if I ordered a corsage.  I didn't, but looked at the card that came with it and couldn't believe that Pam Munoz Ryan and Brian Selznick sent me a corsage and boutonniere (and one of the most hilarious cards EVER)!  I was also Pam and Brian's publicist way back and was so touched that they remembered my event!

Lovingly pinning David's boutonniere.

I then did a talk and reading from Prom and Prejudice.  I'd post a few pictures of that, but it's really hard to get a good photo of someone reading.  Especially the scene I was reading from, I was doing a bunch of different voices, including Lydia's...and boy, do I make some weird faces when I do her.  At one point when I was talking, I was looking out at the audience, so excited for the great turnout.  I saw so many familiar faces...and then one face popped out at me.  And before I could help myself, I said "Oh my God, Alice Hoffman is here!"  Yes, I was also Alice's publicist (at both Scholastic and Little, Brown).  Again, I was floored that she came for me!

With Alice!

As if the evening couldn't get any better, during the Q&A a father told me that his daughter loved The Lonely Hearts Club so much, she's read it more times than Harry Potter.  I really tried hard to not burst out to in tears at that point as I was so overwhelmed by all the support I had!

It was great to talk to everybody during the signing and it's so much fun to get to put faces to names.  I was especially excited to meet Britta a book blogger (check out her review of Prom and Prejudice here) who brought me cookies - how sweet is that? They were so yummy, I'll even admit to eating two of them for breakfast this morning.

Natalie, me, and the infamous blogger/cookie baker Britta!

I could seriously write a paragraph about every single person who was there as I was so thrilled to meet everybody.  I had friends come out from all different aspects of my life - from my best friend since I was three and college friends to work colleagues and new author friends (the fabulous Courtney Sheinmel, author of Positively, and Michael Northrop, whose upcoming novel, Trapped, is already getting amazing buzz)!

In what's become a tradition, my friends and I go out for karaoke afterwards.  David and I had to kick things off by singing my prom song "Heaven" by Bryan Adams. And then I pretty much sang anything and everything (I do think Katy Perry's "Teenage Dream" might become a staple, and OF COURSE, I "sang" - more liked screamed - "Since U Been Gone" aka my favorite song, EVER).

By the time I got home (and my voice shot!), I sat in bed thinking about the evening and what a truly incredibly night it was.  I don't think I can say enough how honored and touched I was by the turnout and enthusiasm for Prom and Prejudice.  I feel so lucky to have so many wonderful people in my life and that I'm able to say things like "I"m working on my third book!"  So a huge thank you to Books of Wonder, my editor David, agent Jodi Reamer, publicist Sheila Marie Everett (can't believe I didn't get a picture of Sheila Marie and Jodi!), and everybody who was there.

I hope to meet many more people on the road this winter/spring (check out my upcoming events on my EVENTS page).  I can't guarantee any super famous authors will show up, but this author would love to meet you.

XOXOXO, Elizabeth

Best of 2010

Happy 2011!  In honor of the New Year, I thought I’d reflect on my personal favorites of last year (which is SO 2010 of me).

FAVORITE YA BOOK: Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.  Catching Fire was my favorite book of 2009 so this really should come to no surprise, especially to people who read it.  It’s very hard to talk about this book without giving anything away and there were many twists and turns.  All I can say was that as a member of Team Peeta, I was a nervous wreck for most of the book.  And I burst into tears at the end (all I’ll say for those who read it was it was the word “real” that caused me to break down).  I’ve known Suzanne for years (yep, I’m a total namedropper!) and couldn’t be happier for her success.  Good things really do happen to good people.  Not to mention extremely talented people!

FAVORITE ADULT BOOK (SERIOUS): Room by Emma Donoghue.  This book has received a lot of year end accolades and rightfully so.  The story of a five-year-old boy who has lived his life in a single room with his mother is simply amazing.  I can’t say much about the book without giving anything away, but I will say that it isn’t as sad as you would think.  What stuck with me the most is Donoghue’s ability to channel the innocence of a five-year-old and what we, as adults, take for granted.

FAVORITE ADULT BOOK (FUN): The Opposite of Me by Sarah Pekkanen.  I first heard about this book from one of my favorite authors, Jennifer Weiner, on Twitter.  Then I had the privilege to meet Sarah at the Gaithersburg Book Festival where we were both presenting.  The Opposite of Me is about two fraternal twin sisters who have very little in common – both in looks and personality.  When Lindsey (“the smart one”) gets fired from her NYC advertising job, she moves back home to Maryland where her sister Alex (“the pretty one”) is getting ready to marry an extremely wealthy man.   I don’t want to say too much (can you tell I hate spoilers?), but if you think you know where this book is going, believe me, you don’t.  I read this book while on vacation and several times I turned to my friend and said, “I can’t believe XYZ just happened!”  It even started to downpour while we were sitting by the pool, but I stayed under my umbrella and kept reading.  Before the book was over, I knew I found a new author to add to my “favorites” list.  While extremely entertaining, this book also made me think about identity and other’s perception of you.  Can’t recommend this enough!

FAVORITE CD: The Suburbs, Arcade Fire.  A great year for music, but this album is tops for me.  I’ve been a fan of Arcade Fire for years and was looking forward to this album all year.  I’m so happy it didn’t disappoint.  They are also an amazing live band.  It’s really hard for me to pick my favorite track, so I’ll give you several: “The Suburbs,” “Ready to Start,” “Empty Room,” “City With No Children,” “Suburban War,” “Month of May,” “We Used to Wait.”  Runner-up for favorite CD of the year: Tired Pony’s The Place We Ran From.

FAVORITE TV SHOW – COMEDY: Modern Family. I was late to the Modern Family bandwagon.  I had friends (and Entertainment Weekly which is my entertainment Bible) keep telling me to watch it.  So I went online and watched the first few episodes and was hooked.  This season it has gotten even better.  There is not a single character on the show that isn’t hysterical.  If I HAD to choose my favorites, it would be Mitchell and Cameron.  It’s the only show where I consistently laugh out loud.  As much as I love Glee, Modern Family totally deserved their Emmy this year.  Honorable Mention: Community (and I can’t wait for Parks and Recreation to return in January!)

FAVORITE TV SHOW – DRAMA: The Walking Dead.  At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to watch the show, but it is AMC and Mad Men is made of awesome.  After the first episode I was hooked.  I still can’t believe the first season was only six episodes – they created such well-drawn characters that you already felt invested in their safety after knowing them for a few minutes.  I can’t wait for the second season…I’m sure it will be worth the wait.

FAVORITE MOVIE:  The Social Network.  I can’t remember the last time the end titles came up for a movie and I was disappointed it was over.  That was exactly what happened when I was watching The Social Network.  It was smart, funny, compelling and the actors were at the top of their game.  I’ll totally admit to coming home and Googling all of people the movie is based on.  And you’ll never look at Facebook the same way again.  Honorable Mention: Toy Story 3 (totally bawled at the end, Pixar can do no wrong in my eyes)

FAVORITE CONCERT:  Prince.  I saw Prince several years ago and it was one of the greatest concerts I’ve ever seen (Sir Paul McCartney is my absolute favorite concert of all time).  While Price didn’t play as long or as many classic songs this time, he is simply one of the greatest showman of all time.  He can sing, dance, play guitar and writes some of the most infectious pop songs ever written.  When the organ cane on and I heard “Dearly beloved…” I grabbed my friend and totally freaked out.  Honorable Mentions: Florence + the Machine and Tired Pony

What were your favorites of 2010? (Please note, I’m trying to open the comments back up, but I used to get a ton of spam, so I’m going to have to approve all the comments – please be patient!). UPDATE: I had to shut down the comments again because I kept getting spam - I'm having it worked on so I can have them up again soon.

Looking forward to lots of amazing books, music, movies and TV in 2011! XO, Elizabeth

10 in ‘10 Teen Chick Lit Challenge

I hope everybody had a wonderful holiday and not too many of you were stranded due to the East Coast blizzard!  I was supposed to fly back to NYC on Tuesday, but my flight was canceled so now I’m finally returning tomorrow.  It was nice to spend a few extra days with my parents, but their internet wasn’t working, so I’m really delayed in getting a few blogs up.  But I’m at my sister and brother-in-law’s for New Year’s Eve and can FINALLY post something!  Hooray!

10_in_10_Chick_Lit_Challenge

Back in August, I did an online chat with the fabulous Jessica of ChickLitTeens.com and Kay Cassidy, author extraordinaire of The Cinderella Society, as part of their “10 in 10 Teen Chick Lit Challenge.” (Details at http://www.chicklitteens.com/2009/12/10-in-10-teen-chick-lit-challenge.html).

As 2010 closes, I wanted to share with you my list of the Teen Chick Lit books that I read, and loved, in 2010.  Enjoy!

1)      Tangled by Carolyn Mackler 2)      Bedeviled: Daddy’s Little Angel by Shani Petroff 3)      Heist Society by Ally Carter 4)      The Daughters by Joanna Philbin 5)      Reality Check by Jen Calonita 6)      Only the Good Spy Young by Ally Carter 7)      Gimme a Call by Sarah Mlynowski 8)      Something, Maybe by Elizabeth Scott 9)      Waiting for You by Susane Colasanti 10)    The Duff by Kody Keplinger 11)    Cinderella Society by Kay Cassidy

I’m not able to do a lot of reading while I’m writing (since I should be writing!), so I was shocked that I not only read a bunch of awesome books that fit the category, but that I read 11!  I did read #6-10 on vacation in August, plus a fabulous “adult” novel, The Opposite of You, which I’ll be blogging about next.  I was in Costa Rica, which was beautiful, but since I’m super pale, I can’t really be in the sun so I stayed under an umbrella and read the entire time.  It was heaven!

Happy Reading…and Happy New Year!

XOXO, Elizabeth

Prom and Prejudice Prom Photo Promo

Try to say that blog header four times fast! In honor of Prom and Prejudice's release, I'll be posting my prom photo on my Twitter and Facebook pages on Monday, December 27.  I thought it would be fun to ask some of my author friends to do the same - and I've already heard back from a bunch (I don't want to say who in case for whatever reason they are unable to find a photo or back out due to regretful hairstyles or dress choices from high school).  Then I decided to do a contest for sign copies of Prom and Prejudice.

IF YOU WENT TO PROM Simply post your photo on Twitter using the tag #PromAndPrejudice or post it on the wall of Facebook and tag me in it.

IF YOU DIDN'T GO TO PROM Post a photo of you with your friends, your favorite book, your family, whatever you want!  On Twitter use the #PromAndPrejudice tag or tag me on Facebook.

I'll pick two winners each from Facebook and Twitter on Sunday, January 2!

Be sure to checkout the #PromAndPrejudice tag starting Monday, December 27th - I'll be retweeting the photos from my author friends as well!

Happy prom photo hunting...AND Happy Holidays! XOXO, Elizabeth
